Game-based learning for responsible leadership
The Lab is a project of the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre. The project is co-directed by Hilary Martin and Prof Chris MacDonald.
We launched GameLab in 2018. Through this game-based learning lab, we are building interactive games playable on mobile devices (choose-your-own-adventure text games).
In these character-driven games, players must navigate ethical leadership challenges in the workplace.
We are conducting three studies to keep our games realistic and useful:
MBA student interviews on ethical challenges they faced in their early career roles and how they navigated these challenges
In-class research comparing the use of traditional paper cases vs interactive case games to develop critical thinking in workplace ethics challenges
Think Aloud Protocols to better understand and design for the emotional side of ethical decision-making challenges, in order to improve our text-based game experiences for reflection and creative problem-solving
These studies, plus our collaborative work with students, faculty, early career employees, and corporate advisors in game development, help us to write realistic challenges and consequences into our games. Ongoing feedback means that the games are always growing and changing.
GameLab was built with the early support of the Brookfield Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
